2,2'-(4-Aminophenylimino)diethanol is a synthetic antifungal agent that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membranes. 2,2'-(4-Aminophenylimino)diethanol binds to the enzyme lanosterol 14 alpha-demethylase and blocks its activity. This prevents the accumulation of ergosterol in the cell membrane and leads to impaired fungal growth. 2,2'-(4-Aminophenylimino)diethanol has been shown to be effective against a variety of fungi including Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Rhizopus nigricans. It can also be used as a colorant for histological preparations.
