Acetylation of N-Acetyl-thiazolidine 4-carboxylic acid is achieved by reacting it with acetic anhydride in the presence of a base, such as triethylamine. This reaction produces N-acetyl-thiazolidine 4,5 dicarboxylic acid. Acetylation of the compound prevents it from being oxidized, which may prevent the formation of toxic substances. It is also used as a diluent for other medicines and drugs. The acetylated form is sold under the trade name "Thiazone".
