It is a stereospecific and chemoenzymatic synthesis of (R)-(-)-4-amino-3-hydroxybutanoic acid. This compound exhibits strong antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. (R)-(-)-4-Amino-3-hydroxybutanoic acid also inhibits the production of proteinases by various bacteria, including proteases from Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus faecalis.
