Activated carbon is a material that can be used for wastewater treatment. It is made of charcoal, which has been heated to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Activated carbon removes organic contaminants from water by adsorption. The process of adsorption involves the absorption of molecules from the liquid onto the surface of the activated carbon particles, which are then removed from the water. Activated carbon can also be used as a filter in other applications such as removing odors or toxins from air or gas. Activated carbon is used in medical treatments for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and skin cancer, because it has a high affinity for aromatic hydrocarbons present in these conditions.
Activated carbon can also be used as an oxidation catalyst. Catalysts are substances that increase the rate at which chemical reactions occur without being consumed by those reactions themselves. In this case, activated charcoal increases the rate at which oxidation reactions occur without being consumed by them itself.
