2-Acetoxyisobutyryl chloride is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis. It is used in vitro to study the acylation reaction between an aromatic hydrocarbon and an amide. 2-Acetoxyisobutyryl chloride has a carbonyl group which can react with amino acids, leading to the formation of reaction products. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay showed that this compound inhibits both herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 in vitro. In addition, it has shown antiviral potency against herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 and other DNA viruses such as vaccinia virus.
