Azure II Eosinate is a photosensitiser that can be used to activate chemical species to produce reactive oxygen species. This agent has been shown to be effective against gram-negative bacteria, with the exception of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Azure II Eosinate is activated by light and penetrates deeply into tissue. It is most commonly used in nasal cavity and cavities, but may also be applied topically or injected intravenously. The chemical process of activation requires a diode for illumination and a handpiece for application. Azure II Eosinate has been shown to cause liver toxicity in rats, as well as cellular damage in human liver cells when exposed to radiation.
