3-(4-Aminophenyl)propanoic acid (3APPA) is a fluorescent derivative of 3-mercaptopropionic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-6, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung cells. The antiinflammatory effects of 3APPA may be due to its ability to block the activation of nuclear factor-κB (NFκB). In addition, this molecule has been found to bind dopamine receptors in human serum, which is significant because dopamine is thought to play a role in depression. 3APPA also inhibits the enzyme diazonium salt, which catalyzes the oxidation of aromatic amines with nitrous acid or other oxidizing agents. This inhibition prevents the formation of polyclonal antibodies against these molecules.
