(1R,2R)-(-)-1-Amino-2-indanol is an optically active, chiral molecule that is used as a medicine. It is made by the enolization of ethylhexanol with sodium in liquid ammonia. The amine group is attached to the carbon at the opposite end from the alcohol. This enantiomer has a solid form and can be crystallized or extracted from n-hexadecane or propionate, which are both organic solvents. (1R,2R)-(-)-1-Amino-2-indanol has been shown to be effective in treating various diseases such as diabetes mellitus and cancer.
