Amethystoidin A is a diterpenoid alkaloid that inhibits cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication in vitro. Amethystoidin A has also been found to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. The compound has been shown to be cytotoxic against K562 cells and leukemia cells, as well as cancer cells from cervical cancer patients. It also inhibits the growth of tumor cells by inducing caspase-dependent apoptosis. Amethystoidin A is obtained from the fructus ligustri plant, which contains fatty acids and chloride, which may be responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects.
