Descripción:Allopregnanolone is a hormone that is synthesized from progesterone in the brain. It has been shown to have therapeutic effects on major depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, as well as seizure disorders. Allopregnanolone also has anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties. It binds to GABA receptors in the brain and inhibits the synthesis of glutamate. This leads to an increase in the activity of the anterior cingulate cortex, which is involved in mood regulation, and a decrease in the rate constant for cardiac contractions. Allopregnanolone has been shown to be effective at treating patients with epilepsy who are not responsive to traditional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). A study conducted at Yale University suggested that allopregnanolone may also be effective for people with Alzheimer's disease. The study found that allopregnanolone improved cognitive function among patients with Alzheimer's disease who had low levels of this hormone.
