The synthesis of this compound starts with an olefinic coupling reaction, which yields an imine intermediate. The imine is hydrolyzed to yield the desired product. 3-Aminocinnamic acid ethyl ester can be found in plants such as liriodenine and liriodendronine, as well as in animal tissues. It also acts as a neurotransmitter and activates the nitrate receptor on nerves, which leads to increased blood pressure or heart rate. 3-Aminocinnamic acid ethyl ester also binds to the cation channel of benzoquinoline drugs and mediates their effects on the central nervous system.
