Allatostatin I is a reactive compound that is used as a diagnostic agent. It has been shown to be active against the eggs and larvae of insects in vitro, with an LD50 of 2 μg/mL. Allatostatin I is not active against most other invertebrates or mammals, but it does show some activity against mice. Allatostatin I has also been shown to be a useful tool for identifying terminal residues in polypeptides and proteins. The terminal amino acid sequence can be determined by using the allatostatin I esterase linkages as a cleavage point. Allatostatin I is also used as an immunogen for the production of monoclonal antibodies. This compound has a hydroxyl group that can react with methanol solvent to form an ester, which may be responsible for its biological activity. Allatostatin I reacts with fatty acids, giving it diagnostic properties.
