It is used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and in the synthesis of nomegestrol acetate, which is an estrogenic drug. Ammonium trifluoroacetate is also used to study the biological properties of receptors and other proteins. The thermal expansion property of ammonium trifluoroacetate can be used to determine its concentration in a sample. Ammonium trifluoroacetate also has potent antagonistic effects against HIV infection and can be detected with high sensitivity. Studies have shown that ammonium trifluoroacetate is toxic to humans; however, it does not accumulate in the body.
