2-Amino-3,5-difluorophenol is a benzoxazole derivative that is used to measure the blood concentration of methaemoglobin. It is also used as a model system for the study of the metabolism of benzoxazoles and to measure the metabolic activity of bacteria in urine. The technique relies on the oxidation of 2-amino-3,5-difluorophenol by methaemoglobin and subsequent measurement of the amount of 2,3,5-trichlorophenol produced by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The urinary metabolites are measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection.
