Descripción

Metanephrine is a catecholamine that is produced by the adrenal medulla and secreted into the blood. It is also known as DOPA, which stands for 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine. Metanephrine levels in the urine are elevated in women with pheochromocytoma, and can be used to diagnose this condition. A diagnosis of pheochromocytoma can be made by measuring the level of metanephrines in urine samples. The enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase converts dopamine to metanephrine, which can be detected with an LC-MS/MS method. The detection sensitivity of this method is 1 ng/mL or lower. Metanephrine levels can also be measured using a glucuronide conjugate that is formed when the body metabolizes metanephrine. This form may not be detectable until after 24 hours after ingestion of a drug or other substance
