5-Decanol is a secondary alcohol that is oxidized to 5-decanoic acid. It can be found in many different types of oils, including animal fats and plant sources such as coconut oil. The oxidation of 5-decanol produces the hydroxyl group, which is important for the chemical reactions that produce other compounds. 5-Decanol also has two enantiomers, which are mirror images of each other. These two forms cannot be superimposed on each other and have different physical properties. The structural isomers are 5-decanol and its isomer 5-dodecanol. The solubility of these two compounds differs due to their functional groups; the solubility of 5-decanol is increased because it contains an ether extract group, while the solubility of 5-dodecanol is decreased because it contains a dodecyl group.
5-Decanol can also be found in aerogenes bacteria as a carbon source.
