Sodium ricinolate is a sodium salt of ricinoleic acid. It has been used as a diagnostic agent in the detection of protease activity, which can be measured by determining the production of hydrogen peroxide and organic acids. Sodium ricinolate also has detergent properties, which may be due to its ability to form metal hydroxides when in contact with magnesium salt or calcium stearate. The macrocyclic structure and vasoactive intestinal peptide present in this compound are responsible for its emulsification properties. Sodium ricinolate can be used as an emulsifier in detergent compositions with benzalkonium chloride.
