N-Butyl picolinate is a carboxylate that has been shown to inhibit the activity of some enzymes, including dopamine β-hydroxylase and chromobacterium oxidase. It also inhibits bacterial growth in cultures and has antihypertensive activity. N-Butyl picolinate has been shown to be effective against prediabetes in mice by increasing the level of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). This drug is an inhibitor of cholesterol biosynthesis and can cause disruption of bacterial cells. The compound binds to nitrogen atoms in bacteria, which interrupts the synthesis of amino acids, leading to cell death.
