1,2-Naphthalic anhydride is a polycyclic aromatic compound that can be used as a starting material in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to form by oxidation of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride and by thermal rearrangement of 2,6-dichloroquinone. The product is believed to undergo cyclization reactions to form two molecules of naphthalene. This reaction has been shown to be catalyzed by the addition of oxygenated solvents such as acetone or ethanol. The analytical method for this compound is mass spectrometric detection after conversion into a derivative.
