The kinetic parameters of this enzyme are optimal for the detection of 1-chloro-3-phenylpropan-2-ol in complex mixtures. It has been used in pharmaceuticals as a chiral building block, where it forms a ternary complex with a chiral metal ion and an amino acid. This enzyme is also able to catalyze the conversion of phenylacetone into amphetamine.
