3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoic acid is a natural product that has been found to be an inhibitor of formate dehydrogenase. It is metabolized by glucuronidation and demethylation, with the latter being catalysed by aldehyde oxidase. 3-Ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoic acid is also partially catalysed by nerve tissue, which may be due to its ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. The compound has also been detected in human urine at concentrations of up to 0.05mg/l. This suggests that 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzoic acid can be used as a biomarker for exposure to toxicants such as arsenic and mercury, although it may also be present in trace amounts due to its natural occurrence in plants and their products.
