- p-Toluic acid, benzyl ester
Benzyl 4-methylbenzoate is an organic compound that is used as a solvent and a reagent in organic synthesis. It undergoes cyclodehydration to form indanones. This reaction can be done efficiently with the use of benzoic acid or benzaldehyde. The reaction between benzyl 4-methylbenzoate and thiosemicarbazide results in the formation of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, which undergoes amido or oxalyl substitution to produce 2,2′-dichlorobenzophenone or 2,2′-dichlorobenzophenol. Benzyl 4-methylbenzoate has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by inhibiting chloride ion transport.
Aldehydes react with benzyl 4-methylbenzoate to form benzoates. An example is the dehydration of anth
