2-Phenyl-1,3-dithiolane is an oxidation product of 1-phenyl-3-ethoxycarbonylthioacetone. The reaction mechanism for the production of 2-phenyl-1,3-dithiolane from 1-phenyl-3-ethoxycarbonylthioacetone is a dioxygenation with a fluorine atom. This reaction can be carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst such as aluminium chloride or naphthalene. The reaction is exothermic and is driven to completion by the generation of heat. The yield of 2-phenyl-1,3-dithiolane is dependent on the concentration of reagents and temperature. Constant stirring will also increase the rate at which this reaction occurs.
2-(2'-Phenylethyl) -1, 3 -dithiolane (PDT) has been found to be an efficient method for detecting
