Calcium L-lactate pentahydrate is the calcium salt of L-lactic acid, which is a naturally occurring organic compound. It is produced by the hydrolysis of lactose, which is a sugar found in milk. Calcium L-lactate pentahydrate has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms caused by bacterial strains that are sensitive to its effects. This product can also be used as an excipient for other pharmaceutical products and it has been shown to increase the shelf life of certain drugs. It has been found that light exposure may cause this product to form crystals; however, this does not affect its efficacy or safety.
