It also has anti-cancer properties and can be used as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. 5H,6H,7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-6-one is an alkylating agent that forms covalent bonds with DNA and proteins by reacting with nucleophilic functional groups such as hydroxy or amino groups. The nitro group on the molecule can be reduced to form a catalytic reduction product that reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl radicals. These reactive intermediate molecules are able to react with various biological molecules such as DNA and proteins.
