Niceritrol is a nicotinic acid, which is a type of vitamin B3 that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Niceritrol may be used to treat autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders by reducing cholesterol levels and by inhibiting the production of PGE2, which is an inflammatory mediator. Niceritrol has also been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiac function, as well as on diabetic neuropathy, epididymal adipose tissue and dextran sulfate-induced inflammation in mice. It can also inhibit the activities of enzymes such as fatty acid synthase and phospholipase A2. Pharmacokinetic studies have found that niceritrol has a longer half-life than other forms of nicotinic acid. Niceritrol has also been shown to increase sodium-dependent glucose cotransport in rats.
