Eugenol is a phenolic compound that is used in many different industries, including as a flavoring agent and fragrance. It is also used in the production of medicines and as an analytical reagent. Eugenol has been shown to have significant effects on the metabolism of cells, and it has been shown to reduce the viability of cervical cancer cells by binding to the receptor for prostaglandin E2. Eugenol also inhibits hydroxylase enzymes, which are necessary for synthesis of fatty acids. The eugenol can be extracted from cloves by using solvent extraction or steam distillation methods. In vitro methodologies such as glycol ether extraction and microcapsules may also be used for this purpose.
