Ethyl coumalate is a blood pressure-lowering agent that is used to treat cardiac and vascular diseases. It is an organocatalytic compound that reduces the formation of acid in the body. The active natural product inhibits the enzyme dehydrogenase, which converts acetaldehyde into acetic acid. This conversion leads to increased levels of hydrogen ions, which results in an increase in blood pressure. Ethyl coumalate also has depressant effects on the central nervous system, which may be due to its electron-deficient nature. The β-unsaturated aldehydes are responsible for this property, as well as its ability to activate methylene groups in the central nervous system.
