Dihydroceramide is a lipid that is synthesized from sphingosine, an amino acid. The hydration of the molecule to form dihydroceramide may be a potential biomarker for cells and tissues undergoing dehydration. Dihydroceramide has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal strains, such as endophytic fungus. It also has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth in vitro, as well as cellular lipid biosynthesis. This lipid may also have a role in the regulation of at1 receptor activity by binding to this receptor and inhibiting its activation.
