3,5-Dichlorobenzamide is an herbicide that inhibits the growth of weeds by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins. It is a chlorinated amide and a potent herbicide that can be used to control weeds in lettuce. 3,5-Dichlorobenzamide has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of proteins in plants by binding to protein-synthesizing enzymes. This binding prevents the formation of amino acids, which are necessary for protein synthesis. 3,5-Dichlorobenzamide has also been shown to hydrolyze formamide and produce crystalline salts with alkali metals such as potassium or sodium.
