It is a member of the group p2 of the periodic table and has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. The compound is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid. 1-Bromo-4-chlorobutane is used for treating infectious diseases such as malaria by interfering with purine metabolism. It can be administered orally or intravenously and has low bioavailability due to its rapid hydrolysis in the gastrointestinal tract.
