2-Bromonaphthalene is a reactive chemical that reacts with carbon disulphide to form naphthalene. 2-Bromonaphthalene has a metastable form and can be obtained from the thermal expansion of naphthalene. It has been shown to react with hydrogen chloride in the presence of ethanolic solution of methanol to form a mixture of chloroform and bromobenzene. 2-Bromonaphthalene has a uv absorption spectrum at 240 nm, which is diagnostic for its presence when dissolved in water or other solvents. The product can be isolated using vacuum distillation and purified by recrystallization. The infrared spectra show a strong hydroxyl group at 3395 cm-1, which is attributed to the OH bond between C=O and HOH.
