2-Butylthiophene is a stable complex with palladium. It is used in the synthesis of organic compounds, especially those containing carbon-carbon bonds. 2-Butylthiophene forms reactive intermediates that can react with organic compounds to form new reaction products. These reactions can be monitored by element analysis and are used in the study of carcinogenesis. The compound has been shown to have toxic effects on tissues and animals, but these effects are not well understood at this time. Techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy and animal studies have been used to determine some of the functional groups present in 2-butylthiophene.
