The terminal alkene can be prepared from the reduction of farnesyl diphosphate, which is catalyzed by diphosphate synthase. This reaction can be carried out in high yield with various alcohols. 3-Bromo-3-buten-1-ol has been used as a probe to detect glycosidic carbonyl groups, which are important for the synthesis of steroidal glycosides. It has also been shown to desensitize phosphodiesterases and inhibit the activity of diphosphate, which is needed in many biological processes such as DNA replication and protein synthesis.
