N-Benzylmaleimide is a drug that has been shown to inhibit the growth of leukemia cells in cell culture and animal models. It was found to be effective against influenza virus, but not against other viruses. The biological studies have shown that N-benzylmaleimide inhibits the synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein. This drug has a low bioavailability due to its chemical structure, which may also make it unsuitable for oral delivery. A reaction yield of about 10% has been observed for this drug. The effective dose for N-benzylmaleimide is unknown; however, it is thought that it may be between 500 and 1,000 mg/kg body weight.
