Benzylhydroxylamine hydrochloride is an antimicrobial agent that has inhibitory properties against a range of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. Benzylhydroxylamine hydrochloride was shown to have anticancer activity in a mouse model of bowel disease. It also inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, from human monocytes. This agent also has been shown to be effective in animal models of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism by which this drug exerts its effects is not well understood but may involve the inhibition of dopamine β-hydroxylase in the brain or nitrogen atoms that are important for protein synthesis. Benzylhydroxylamine hydrochloride can react with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to form a reactive intermediate that can covalently bind to proteins and cause toxicity.
