Ruthenium-catalyzed metathesis reactions are used for the synthesis of organic molecules. This process is characterized by the formation of a metal-carbon bond, where the carbon atom moves from one organic molecule to another. The catalytic cycle starts with a proton transfer from an acid to the ruthenium catalyst, which then forms a covalent bond between the two reactants and releases an H+ ion. The newly formed intermediate is then attacked by another reactant molecule and undergoes a second proton transfer. The process is repeated until all of the reactants have been consumed.
