3-Bromo-2-hydroxypyridine is a low potency competitive inhibitor of the HIV protease that binds to the active site of the enzyme. It has been shown to have anti-cancer activity in prostate cancer cells and also inhibits inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting serine proteases. 3-Bromo-2-hydroxypyridine is synthesized by reacting 1,2,4-triazole with bromine in the presence of hydrochloric acid. This reaction produces a mixture of substituted pyridines, which are purified using column chromatography. The chemical structure is characterized using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy.
