2-bromo-3-fluoro-4-methylpyridine is a non-nucleoside inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV). It is active against HIV strains that are resistant to nucleoside analogues. It has been shown to inhibit viral transcriptase and reverse transcriptase, which are enzymes that transcribe and replicate the viral genome. 2-bromo-3-fluoro-4-methylpyridine also inhibits the synthesis of viral proteins by inhibiting pyridone synthase and pyridones reductase. This agent also has activity against some other viruses, including herpes simplex virus type 1 and respiratory syncytial virus. 2-bromo-3-fluoro-4-methylpyridine has been shown to have antiviral effects in cell cultures, even when the cells are exposed to high concentrations of the drug.
