3-Bromostyrene is a reactive, inorganic aryl halide that can be used to synthesize epoxides. It is also used as a precursor for the synthesis of 5-HT2 receptor antagonists. 3-Bromostyrene reacts with the active site of enzymes, such as carbonic anhydrase and hepatic esterase, by direct substitution at the active site. The copolymerization of 3-bromostyrene with styrene or other monomers can provide polymers with high thermal stability and chemical resistance. 3-Bromostyrene has been shown to catalyze carbonyl reduction reactions in drug metabolism, which are mediated by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
