It has been shown to be biocompatible with human serum and water vapor. The interaction between the cation and anion creates a solvation shell around the solvent molecules in the ionic liquid. This solvation shell leads to hydrogen bonding interactions with cellulose, which prevents crystalline cellulose from forming. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment because it removes copper ions from the solution by electrochemical reactions.
