Butanohydrazide is a hydrazide derivative of coumarin that blocks the action of the enzyme hydroxylase, which is involved in the biosynthesis of haptoglobin, a protein that binds and inactivates hemoglobin-haptoglobin complexes. It also inhibits glycol ester formation and has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of blood coagulation. Butanohydrazide has been used as a component in monoclonal antibody production and has been shown to inhibit the reaction mechanism of oligosaccharides.
