5-tert-Butyl-2-furoic acid is an analog of phenylsulfonyl chloride that is activated by thionyl chloride. It is used to synthesize the x-ray structures of various organic molecules. The process of alkylation has been shown to be analogous to the process of substitution, in which a hydrogen atom on a carbon atom is replaced with an alkyl group. 5-tert-Butyl-2-furoic acid reacts with chlorobenzene in the presence of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, yielding an ion exchange reaction. This compound has also been used to synthesize isothiazoles and pyrroles.
