The yield of 4-bromo-2-nitro anisole is high and can be increased by diluting the reactants in a solvent. The reaction mechanism for this synthesis is nucleophilic substitution with chloride as the nucleophile, followed by nitration of the resulting bromonitrobenzene.
The product is then treated with trinitrobenzene to form 2,4-dinitroanisole.
