5-Benzyl-4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3thiol is a triazole that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is effective against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, including both aerobic and anaerobic species. 5BBPT has been shown to be active against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 5BBPT also inhibits the growth of fungi such as Candida albicans. 5BBPT can be synthesized by the reaction of benzene with chloroformate in the presence of ethyl chloroacetate or acid methyl ester. This synthesis can also be performed using amides or amines with azides and urea derivatives.
5BBPT is soluble in water and alcohols, but insoluble in oils.
