It is used for the treatment of wastewater because it has been shown to be effective at removing nitrogen from wastewater. 1-Benzylpiperazine is also a metabolite of benzylpiperazine, which has been shown to have physiological effects on locomotor activity and the production of lc-ms/ms. The physiological effects are probably due to its ability to increase dopamine levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake by monoamine transporters. 1-Benzylpiperazine can also form a glucuronide conjugate with dopamine, hydroxyl group.
