4-Bromo-3-nitropyridine is a nucleophile that can be utilised in cross-coupling reactions. It has been used in the synthesis of bromopyridines, which are antitumor agents that have been studied as potential anticancer drugs. 4-Bromo-3-nitropyridine has also been shown to react with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and form biaryls. This reaction may help to detoxify PAHs and has potential applications in environmental protection. 4-Bromo-3-nitropyridine reacts with lavendamycin, an antibiotic, to form a new molecule, 4-(4'-bromobiphenyl)-2-(4'-nitrophenyl)pyrimidine (BPY), which inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis.
