4-Bromo-1-methyl-1H-imidazole is an organic compound that belongs to the group of imidazoles. It is a chiral molecule with two stereoisomers, 4-bromo-1H-imidazole and 1H-imidazole. This compound can be synthesized by reacting ethyl formate with α-amino acid and chlorides in the presence of magnesium, followed by reduction with lithium aluminum hydride. The yield of this reaction is low, so it is not used in industrial processes. The imidazoles are important for their pharmacological activity as they are a class of drugs such as nitrofurantoin or griseofulvin. The dinitrate derivatives are also important for their metallation reactions and use in organic synthesis.
