This binding prevents the virus from attaching to host cells and spreading. 3-(Bromomethyl)pyridine hydrobromide has been shown to inhibit the growth of influenza A in both cell culture and animal models. The drug also has anti-influenza virus activity against strains of the virus that are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. 3-(Bromomethyl)pyridine hydrobromide could be used as a diagnostic tool for influenza, as well as an antiviral agent for treatment of influenza infections.
