Morpholine is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound and a secondary amine. Morpholine is the precursor to 4-benzylmorpholine-2-carboxylic acid, which is an anti-cancer drug that activates apoptosis in neoplastic cells. The reaction sequence for this process starts with the methylation of morpholine to form methylmorpholine, followed by the reaction of methylmorpholine with acetic anhydride to form 4-benzylmorpholine-2-carboxylic acid. This compound has been shown to have antiproliferative activity in murine lymphoma and human lung carcinoma cells by inhibiting their cycle at G1 phase.
